Here's what my 22 years of practice have taught me about dark circles on Black women over 50...

Dark circles are a sign of skin vitamin deficiency. As Black women age and enter menopause, the skin starts losing the exact vitamins it needs to keep the undereye area clear, bright, and dark-circle free.

Most eye creams sold to black women are loaded with retinol or hydroquinone. And on Black skin, those two ingredients do the opposite of healing and repairing. They irritate.

Any disclaimer on the packaging that this wasn't developed for Black skin and may produce opposite results for that demographic.

Neutrogena Rapid Dark Circle Repair is one of the fastest-selling drugstore eye creams in the country. I understand the appeal. The price is low. Neutrogena is a trusted brand.

...But then you read the ingredient list.

This formula also relies on retinol as its primary active. Same core issue as RoC, just at a lower price point and a thinner consistency.

For my Black patients over 50, retinol products repeat the same cycle almost without exception: early hope, then frustration when the dark circles stay exactly the same or visibly worsen.

One of my patients used this cream for a full month precisely. She came back to my office with noticeably darker undereyes than when she started. The product wasn't malfunctioning. It was doing exactly what retinol does on Black skin.

Slightly less concentrated than some retinol formulas, which makes it marginally less irritating. But still wouldn't recommend for Black skin over 50.

Any ingredient that addresses dark circles on Black skin without triggering additional hyperpigmentation.

Olay Eyes Ultimate Eye Cream claims to target dark circles, wrinkles, and puffiness simultaneously.

The major problem is drugstore eye creams like this one are made with a one-size-fits-all formulation.

Unfortunately, black skin needs specific ingredients to repair, heal, and correct dark circles.

I have had multiple patients use this cream for 4 to 8 weeks without a single observable change in dark circle visibility.

It is not harmful the way retinol products are for Black skin. It simply doesn't work the best on black skin.

Clinical-level concentrations of active ingredients specifically for black skin.

La Mer Eye Concentrate's performance is documented and genuine. But La Mer doesn't disclose that their ingredients weren't built to fight off Black skin aging.

They were built around a luxury consumer who, statistically, has lighter skin.

At $220 a bottle, I expected clinical-grade outcomes for my patients. What I observed in both my patients and on my own undereyes was strong hydration but minimal to zero change in dark circle visibility.

Paying $220 for a formula that doesn't do anything for visible skin aging turned out to be an expensive disappointment for me and my clients.

The hydration is genuinely good. But we're docking points for the luxury price tag and absence of anti-aging results.

Any meaningful clinical testing on Black skin. Ingredient decisions made with Black women over 50 as the primary subject. A price that reflects what it actually delivers for this demographic.

Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment is a genuinely beloved product, and I understand exactly why.

It feels rich and moisturizing. It doesn't irritate. The texture is satisfying. It's "holy grail" for many women. The problem is that it is a moisturizer. Not a dark circle treatment.

There are no active ingredients in this formula that address hyperpigmentation, skin vitamin deficiency, or the undereye sagging that accelerates after menopause on Black skin.

The avocado oil base provides hydration and that's it.

Several of my patients have used this cream for years because someone told them it was the best you could do without going to a dermatologist.

None of them saw their dark circles change. All of them were simply well-moisturized women with dark circles.

It is not a bad product. It's simply the wrong product for this problem.
